| GFS Will Be Seeing Stars |
|
Greenwood promises to become "The Astronomy School" as dreams become reality over the spring and summer. A concrete pad will be laid on the GFS campus soon for a building to house a robotic telescope that will be installed by Bloomsburg University. Professors and students at the universitywill be able to operate the telescope remotely through an Internet connection. BU professor and GFS parent Mike Shepard was the key figure in acquiring this facility. The robotic telescope will also be available for use in programs at Greenwood Friends School. Separately, GFS will acquire a number of hand-held telescopes and other astronomy equipment thanks to a $25,000 grant from The Merck Foundation. Mike Shepard and GFS science teachers Kathy Martin and Craig Muller are ordering the equipment. During the summer, teacher Craig Muller will bring Merck's portable planetarium, StarLab, to the school. Check here later for dates and particulars. The lab made its first visit to GFS in mid-May. |
