The "Care Relationship"  print   email

Quakers explain that Greenwood is “under the care of” of Millville Friends Meeting and the Upper Susquehanna Quarterly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. Our “care relationship” is evidenced in the structure of our school (our bylaws state that more than half of our Board of Directors must be Quaker representatives), in the regular patterns of our activities (once a month the entire school gathers at the Millville Meetinghouse for Meeting for Worship; annual graduation ceremonies are hosted there), and in the commitment of both Meetings to support the school’s educational mission with their corporate resources (annual Garden Tour proceeds benefit tuition assistance funds; members support classroom activities; the Millville Meeting housed our current Middle School during its first year).

On September 8, 2007, the gathered members of Millville Meeting passed the following Minute in affirmation of its support...

Millville Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends reaffirms its commitment to the mission of Education for all children and adults, in our communities, our nation and the world. Thus, Friends are committed to the support of children in public education which serves the majority of all people.

Millville Monthly Meeting is fortunate that members on our Meeting and Quarter took the leadership in establishing Greenwood Friends School nearly 30 years ago.

Through the service of members of the Meeting, the Board of Trustees, teachers. staff, and parents, the School has become an educational community in which students, teachers, and parents value learning, sharing, and living joyfully. The school reflects the Quaker testimonies of integrity, equality, community, simplicity, and peace by providing a challenging and supportive environment. Each child is welcomed and valued as a unique individual in this community.

Friends recognize “that of God” in each person, and this principle is central to the philosophy of educating hearts as well as minds.

Now as the School embarks on a new chapter in its existence, Millville Monthly Meeting earnestly recommits its spiritual, human, and material resources to the long term support of Friends education at Greenwood Friends School.

Besides this richly supportive "care relationship" with Monthly and Quarterly Meetings, the school also enjoys the support of other Quaker institutions, including the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and its Committee on Education (whose financial support has aided our tuition assistance program during the 2007-2008 school year) and the Friends Council on Education.   Both of these groups have lent advice, expertise, and encouragement to the Board and our Head of School.
