Butterflies Are Free

Barb Golder’s Primary students observed a Monarch butterfly emerging from its chrysalis in their classroom.  They released it and watched it fly away over a neighboring farmer's field.  Two chrysalises remain in the class’.   Butterfly box.  Nancy Gale, grandmother to student Noah, supplied the caterpillars from her garden.  The class read Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and made their own hungry caterpillar book.

Questioning Digestion

Primary students in Sarah Odell’s and Lindsay Gale’s class continue to study the human body.  They most recently performed experiments to aid in the teaching of digestion.  Students divided into groups and worked on identifying internal organs, played memory games using pictures of parts of the body, and simulated the digestion process utilizing crackers, vinegar, water, and a soda bottle in a length of stocking standing in as an intestine.

Music To Our Ears

Primary and Intermediate students traveled to Bloomsburg University on Tuesday morning September 30th for the Young Person’s Concert.  The theme of the concert was “The Brass Family.”  The orchestra, which includes Greenwood alumna Samantha, demonstrated how various brass instruments were played as they performed music ranging from Renaissance to Modern styles.

Reach For The Stars

GFS students celebrated Thematic Kickoff Day 2008 with every age group participating in integrated activities such as studying star formations, constructing rocket models, and enjoying space-related stories.  There will be future theme-related events including “A Starry Starry Night” utilizing the robotic telescope installed in cooperation with Bloomsburg University. Each class will weave the theme into their curricular activities throughout the year, culminating in an end-of-year presentation based upon what they have learned.
