| Mexican Studies | | In social science, Intermediate students learned about a Molinillo, an artifact used for frothing hot chocolate. They looked at a variety of Mexican cooking vessels and read about the “Columbian Exchange” that took place during the voyages of Columbus. The class utilized an interactive website (http://www.fieldmuseum.org/Chocolate/kids.html) to learn how chocolate is made. To aid in the study of Mexico using “kitchen science,” students prepared calabaza en tacha, stewed candied pumpkin, which is frequently served for Day of the Dead celebrations. Fifth graders dove deep into learning about the Aztec and Spanish cultures at the time of the conquest.
